Building credit from zero: Capital One Platinum Secured vs OpenSky vs Chime Credit Builder
Three ways into the credit system: a low deposit, no credit check, or no deposit at all. Which door fits depends on what you already have.

With no credit history, most cards are out of reach, and you cannot build a history without a card. Three products on our list are designed to break that loop, and each asks for something different: a small deposit, no credit check, or no deposit at all. Which one fits depends less on the card than on what you already have: a bank account, a direct deposit, a few hundred dollars to set aside.

How building credit from zero actually works
A credit score is a summary of your borrowing history. With no history there is nothing to score. The fix is a credit account that reports to the bureaus every month, used lightly and paid on time, so that a history accumulates. A secured card does this with a refundable deposit that backs your credit line. A credit-builder product, like Chime’s, does it with money you move in advance.
The roadmap: from no file to a regular card
- 1
Pick the door that fits what you have
No bank account: OpenSky. A direct deposit you can route to Chime: Chime Credit Builder. A small deposit and a wish to grow with one issuer: Capital One Platinum Secured. The decision table below walks through it.
- 2
Set up autopay for the full balance
Payment history is generally the single biggest factor in a credit score. One missed payment early on does real damage to a thin file. Autopay removes the risk.
- 3
Use it lightly
Put one or two small, regular bills on the card and pay them off. Keeping the reported balance low relative to the limit generally helps; many guides suggest staying under 30%, which on a $200 limit is $60.
- 4
Do not apply for anything else
Each application usually means a hard inquiry. On a thin file, several close together add up. Give the first account time.
- 5
Watch for the first review
Capital One lists an automatic credit line review from around month 6. OpenSky lists increases without an extra deposit. A higher limit with the same spending lowers your utilization.
- 6
Graduate to a regular card
Once you have a history of on-time payments, a no-fee unsecured card with rewards becomes realistic. Keep the first account open if it has no fee: its age keeps helping you.
Capital One Platinum Secured: the lowest deposit
The Platinum Secured has no annual fee, and the refundable security deposit may be $49, $99 or $200 depending on Capital One’s decision. It reports to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and Capital One lists an automatic credit line review from around month 6. It is rated 4.6, the highest of the three.
The catch is the rate: 29.99% variable. A secured card is not a loan to carry; at that APR, a $200 balance left unpaid for a year costs roughly $60 to $70 in interest, depending on how it compounds. Used as intended, paid in full, the APR never touches you.
OpenSky Secured Visa: no credit check, no bank account
OpenSky is the only card here that explicitly lists no bank account requirement, and applying does not involve a credit check. The deposit starts at $200 and there is a $35 annual fee. It reports monthly to all three bureaus and lists credit line increases without an extra deposit. Its regular APR is 24.64% variable.
What OpenSky costs to hold for a year
- Refundable security deposit (returned when the account closes in good standing)
- $200
- Annual fee
- $35
- Interest, if you pay in full every month
- + $0
- Real cost of the first year
- $35
The deposit is money set aside rather than spent, but it is money you cannot use while the account is open.
The $35 is the price of access. If you already have a bank account and can get approved elsewhere, a no-fee option is cheaper. If you cannot, $35 a year for a reporting credit line is a reasonable trade.
Chime Credit Builder: no deposit, no interest
Chime’s card works differently. There is no annual fee, no credit check, no minimum security deposit and no interest. You move money in advance, and Chime reports your on-time payments monthly. Because you only spend what you have moved, there is no balance to carry and nothing to charge interest on.
The requirement is the whole product: you need a qualifying Chime Checking Account with a direct deposit. If your paycheck can go there, this is the cheapest way into the system. If it cannot, it is not an option. Chime is a financial technology company, not a bank; banking services are provided by partner banks, as our disclosures note.

Questions readers ask
What is the easiest card to get with no credit history?
Secured and credit-builder products are designed for that situation. The OpenSky Secured Visa and Chime Credit Builder do not involve a credit check to apply, and the Capital One Platinum Secured is built for limited or poor credit. No comparison site can predict an approval; only the issuer decides.
How long does it take to build credit from nothing?
It varies, but a scorable file generally needs at least one account with several months of reported activity. Paying on time every month and keeping balances low are the habits that matter most while the history accumulates.
Do I get my secured card deposit back?
A security deposit on a secured card is refundable. It is generally returned when you close the account in good standing or when the issuer moves you to an unsecured card. Check the terms of your specific card.
Does Chime Credit Builder charge interest?
No. You move money in advance and spend it, so there is no interest, no annual fee and no minimum security deposit. It does require a qualifying Chime Checking Account with a direct deposit.
