Chase Sapphire Preferred vs Capital One Venture: two $95 travel cards, one decision

Same fee, opposite philosophies: bonus categories and a richer portal, or 2x on everything. Round by round.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Capital One Venture Rewards cost the same $95 a year and solve the same problem in opposite ways. The Sapphire pays 3x on dining, select streaming and online groceries and 1x on everything else; the Venture pays 2x on nearly everything. Neither is better in the abstract. The winner is set by one ratio in your own budget, and by whether you would redeem through Chase Travel.

On our ranking, the Sapphire Preferred is first among credit cards at 4.9 and the Venture Rewards sixth at 4.6. That gap reflects the whole package: bonus categories, a redemption boost and trip insurance. It does not mean the Sapphire earns more for every household. The six rounds below show what each card does better, and the calculator further down puts your own budget through both. You can also load the pair into the comparator.

Round 1: everyday earning, 2x against 1x

Start with the spending that fits no category: groceries bought in store, gas, utilities, insurance, pharmacy runs, most online shopping. The Venture pays 2x miles on it. The Sapphire Preferred pays 1x.

On every $10,000 of that spending, the Venture earns 20,000 miles, about $200 at the 1 cent a mile its catalogue entry implies. The Sapphire earns 10,000 points: $100 at 1 cent, or $125 if you redeem through Chase Travel at 1.25 cents. The gap is $75 to $100 per $10,000, and for many households this is the largest pool of spending they have.

Note what counts as 1x on the Sapphire. Its 3x grocery rate applies to online groceries. The weekly supermarket run, in person, earns 1x. Edge: Venture Rewards, clearly.

Round 2: dining, streaming and travel bonus categories

Here the Sapphire does what the Venture does not attempt. It pays 3x on dining, select streaming services and online groceries, 2x on all other travel, and 5x on travel booked through Chase Travel. The Venture’s only bonus is 5x on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel; flights booked there earn its standard 2x.

Cents earned per dollar spent. Point and mile values are assumptions. 1.25 cents is what the Sapphire’s “25% more value” for travel redeemed through Chase Travel implies; 1 cent is our floor for any other redemption. The Venture’s 1 cent comes from its catalogue entry: 75,000 miles for about $750 toward travel.

Read the columns against each other. At 1 cent, the Sapphire gains a cent on every dollar of dining and gives one back on every dollar of everything else. Travel booked direct is a wash. Flights through the portal are the Sapphire’s widest edge, 5x against 2x. Redeeming through Chase Travel lifts every Sapphire figure by a quarter, which widens its category lead and cuts its everyday deficit to three-quarters of a cent.

Round 3: welcome offer, 60,000 points vs 75,000 miles

The Sapphire Preferred offers 60,000 bonus points after $5,000 in purchases in the first 3 months. The Venture offers 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in purchases in the first 3 months, which its catalogue entry puts at about $750 toward travel.

18.75¢
Bonus per dollar of required spending, Sapphire: $750 or $600 ÷ $5,000

The qualifying spending also earns the normal rate. Put all of it on uncategorized purchases and the Venture adds 8,000 miles ($80) against the Sapphire’s 5,000 points ($50 at 1 cent, $62.50 at 1.25 cents).

At best, the Sapphire draws level on value and still asks for $1,000 more spending in the same three months. If you would not otherwise spend about $1,667 a month, that threshold is the number that matters: a bonus you miss is worth nothing, and spending more to reach it is not free. Both issuers set their own rules on who can receive a bonus, and offers change, so confirm the current terms on each issuer’s own page. Our welcome bonuses ranked study puts both offers against every other card on the list. Edge: Venture Rewards.

Round 4: what offsets the $95 annual fee

Each card lists one credit that can offset part of its $95 fee, and the two work differently. The Sapphire’s is a $50 annual Chase Travel hotel credit: it recurs every year, but only for a hotel booked through Chase Travel. The Venture’s is up to $120 toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. Our catalogue gives it no frequency, and those memberships generally last several years, so the credit typically helps once per membership rather than once a year. If you already hold a membership, it waits for your renewal.

Worked example

Five years of fee offsets, if you would use each credit

Annual fees over five years: $95 × 5, each card
$475
Sapphire Preferred: $50 hotel credit × 5 years
−$250
Venture Rewards: one Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit
−$120
Sapphire Preferred, net fees over five years
$225 ($45 a year)
Venture Rewards, net fees over five years
$355 ($71 a year)
Sapphire Preferred’s advantage
$130 ($26 a year)

Five years is our assumption for illustration, not a catalogue term; confirm the credit’s current cycle with Capital One. The ledger also assumes the Chase Travel hotel you book each year is one you would have paid for anyway. If it is not, the Sapphire loses $50 a year from its column.

In the year you use it, the Venture’s credit is larger than its fee, by $25. Over time the Sapphire’s smaller credit adds up to more, provided you book through Chase Travel. Edge: Sapphire Preferred, narrowly and conditionally.

Neither card lists lounge access in our catalogue. If you want a travel credit large enough to change the fee math, the step up is the $395 Capital One Venture X, which keeps 2x on everything and adds a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 anniversary bonus miles every year. Our Venture X review tests whether that fee really nets out.

Round 5: redeeming Chase points and Capital One miles

The Sapphire’s catalogue entry promises 25% more value when you redeem points for travel through Chase Travel. That is where this article’s 1.25 cents comes from, and it is conditional: you have to book through Chase’s portal. Redeem any other way and we value the points at our 1-cent floor.

The Venture’s miles are valued by its own entry at about 1 cent toward travel. Our catalogue attaches no portal condition to that value, unlike the Sapphire’s 25% boost, which applies only through Chase Travel. Confirm the current redemption options with the issuer. The Venture also lists transfers to 15+ travel partners. Transfers can return more or less than 1 cent a mile depending on the partner and the booking, so we do not model them.

Chase points are widely reported to transfer to airline and hotel partners too, but our catalogue lists that feature for the Sapphire Reserve, not the Preferred, so it is not scored here. Check Chase’s own page for the current transfer options.

Round 6: trip insurance and the fine print

The Sapphire Preferred lists trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Our catalogue gives no coverage amounts, and neither do we. Coverage of this kind typically applies only when you pay for the trip with the card, only for the covered reasons in the benefits guide, and only up to its limits. The Venture’s catalogue entry lists no trip insurance. If protection on prepaid trips matters to you, read each card’s current guide to benefits rather than assuming. Edge: Sapphire Preferred.

The rest is a draw. Both cards are Visa Signature, both charge no foreign transaction fees, and both list a recommended score range of 690-850. Their variable APRs overlap: 20.24% - 28.24% on the Sapphire, 19.99% - 29.24% on the Venture. If you carry a balance, interest at either range will generally outweigh every reward figure in this article.

Six rounds and a tiebreaker.

The Sapphire takes three rounds and the Venture two, with one split and one tie. That matches their places in the ranking. It does not settle which card pays you more, because the Venture’s two rounds cover the spending many households have the most of.

The crossover: how much dining it takes to beat 2x on everything

Because the fees match, the decision comes down to one comparison. Valuing both currencies at 1 cent, every dollar of dining earns the Sapphire a cent more than the Venture. Every dollar of everything else earns it a cent less. The same holds for select streaming and online groceries, so the Sapphire comes out ahead when its 3x spending is larger than its 1x spending. Through Chase Travel at 1.25 cents, a 3x dollar is worth 1.75 cents more than on the Venture and a 1x dollar 0.75 cents less. The Sapphire then stays ahead until 1x spending passes 2⅓ times 3x spending.

Every dollar of dining earns the Sapphire a cent more than the Venture. Every dollar of everything else earns it a cent less.

Where the Venture pulls level. Below the figure the Sapphire earns more; above it the Venture does. At 1.25 cents the break-even is 3x spending × 1.75 ÷ 0.75. Travel booked direct earns 2x on both, so it adds nothing at 1 cent and half a cent a dollar to the Sapphire at 1.25 cents. Flights through Chase Travel add 3 cents a dollar at 1 cent and 4.25 cents at 1.25 cents. Both only move the line in the Sapphire’s favor. Fee credits are excluded.

Three hypothetical households, $30,000 a year each

The same $30,000 a year, split three ways. Credits and welcome offers are left out; this is the ongoing, year-two answer. At 1 cent the welcome offers would add $150 to the Venture’s side in year one; at 1.25 cents they cancel out.

Same trips on either card: flights earn 2x on the Venture whether booked direct or through Capital One Travel.

At 1 cent a point, the restaurant regulars and the portal traveler finish within $30 of the Venture, while the everything-else household gives up $201 a year by choosing the Sapphire. The Sapphire’s real margin comes from redeeming through Chase Travel. If you would not redeem that way, the Venture’s 2x is hard to beat for any budget that is mostly uncategorized.

Chase points are valued at 1.25 cents, the rate the Sapphire’s “25% more value” implies for travel redeemed through Chase Travel. If you would redeem them another way, multiply the Sapphire’s rewards figure by 0.8 to put them at our 1-cent floor. Capital One miles are valued at 1 cent, as our catalogue’s “about $750 toward travel” for 75,000 miles implies. Transfer partners are not modeled. Earn rates from our catalogue: the Sapphire pays 5x on travel through Chase Travel, 3x on dining, select streaming and online groceries, 2x on other travel and 1x on everything else; the Venture pays 5x on hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel and 2x on everything else, including flights booked there. “Travel portal” means Chase Travel for the Sapphire and Capital One Travel for the Venture. The hotel credit slider starts at $50, which assumes you would book a Chase Travel hotel anyway. The Venture slider starts at $24, the $120 credit spread over five years: our assumption, because our catalogue gives no frequency. Both fees are $95 and neither card lists foreign transaction fees. Estimates only; ongoing value, excluding welcome bonuses unless stated.

At the default settings the Sapphire finishes about $42 ahead: $596 in rewards plus the $50 hotel credit, against $580 plus $24 for the Venture. Value Chase points at 1 cent instead and the Sapphire’s rewards fall to $476, which puts the Venture about $77 ahead on the same budget. The redemption choice moves the answer as much as the spending does.

Holding both, or fixing the Sapphire’s 1x

You do not have to pick one card for the whole budget. Some households hold both: the Sapphire for dining, streaming, online groceries and travel, the Venture for everything else. The second $95 fee is the hurdle. Moving 1x spending to the Venture gains 0.75 cents a dollar with Chase points at 1.25 cents, so it takes about $12,667 a year of that spending to cover the fee. At 1 cent a point, it takes $9,500.

There is a cheaper fix inside Chase. The no-fee Chase Freedom Unlimited earns 1.5% on purchases outside its categories, and our catalogue lists it as pairing with Sapphire cards. Points moved between your own Chase cards are widely reported to pool together, so that 1.5% becomes 1.5 points, worth 1.875 cents a dollar through Chase Travel against the Venture’s 2 cents. At a gap of 0.125 cents, the Venture’s $95 fee would need $76,000 a year of everyday spending to pay for itself; at 1 cent a point, $19,000. Our Chase trio strategy sets out how the pairing works, and the Sapphire Preferred review covers the card on its own.

Our verdict

The Sapphire Preferred ranks first on our list at 4.9 for real reasons: bonus categories where households spend, a 25% redemption boost through Chase Travel and trip insurance the Venture does not list. The Venture Rewards, sixth at 4.6, still earns more for any budget whose 1x spending outweighs its 3x spending at 1 cent a point, or outweighs it more than 2⅓ times if you redeem through Chase Travel. The fees are identical, so the budget decides.

  • Pick the Sapphire Preferred if you dine out, stream and book through Chase Travel

    Chase Sapphire Preferred

3x on dining, select streaming and online groceries, 5x through Chase Travel and trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Trade-off: 1x on everything else, groceries bought in store included, and its best redemption value depends on Chase’s portal.

  • Pick the Venture Rewards if most of your spending fits no category

    Capital One Venture Rewards

2x on every purchase, a welcome offer worth as much for $1,000 less spending, and miles worth about 1 cent toward travel with no portal condition in our catalogue. Trade-off: no dining or streaming bonus, no trip insurance in our catalogue, and a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit that generally comes once per membership.

  • Pair the Sapphire with Freedom Unlimited if you want both halves

    Chase Freedom Unlimited

1.5 points a dollar on everyday spending, pooled with the Sapphire, for no extra fee. Trade-off: two cards to manage, and the math still depends on redeeming through Chase Travel.

Questions readers ask

Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred better than the Capital One Venture?

It is the stronger card overall on our ranking, 4.9 against 4.6, but not the better earner for everyone. Valuing both currencies at 1 cent, the Sapphire earns more only if you spend more on dining, select streaming and online groceries than on purchases outside its categories. Redeeming Chase points through Chase Travel at 1.25 cents widens that range considerably.

Which welcome bonus is better, 60,000 Chase points or 75,000 Capital One miles?

The Venture’s 75,000 miles after $4,000 in 3 months are worth about $750 toward travel. The Sapphire’s 60,000 points after $5,000 in 3 months are worth $600 at 1 cent, or $750 if you redeem through Chase Travel. At best it is a tie, and the Venture asks for $1,000 less spending.

Does the Capital One Venture Global Entry credit renew every year?

Our catalogue lists up to $120 for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck without a frequency. Those memberships generally last several years, so the credit typically helps once per membership rather than annually. Check the current terms with Capital One before you count it against the $95 fee.

Can you have both the Sapphire Preferred and the Venture Rewards?

Holding cards from two issuers is common, though each application is a separate credit decision with no guaranteed outcome. Chase is widely reported to decline applicants who have opened five or more personal cards in the previous 24 months, so application order can matter. The second $95 fee pays off only if you move about $12,667 a year of 1x spending to the Venture, valuing Chase points at 1.25 cents.

Do the Sapphire Preferred and the Venture charge foreign transaction fees?

No. Both list no foreign transaction fees and both run on Visa Signature. The Sapphire Preferred also lists trip cancellation and interruption insurance, which the Venture’s catalogue entry does not.
