The Chase Sapphire Preferred is our top-ranked card on its own. Pair it with the no-fee Chase Freedom Unlimited and Chase Freedom Flex and the same household can earn noticeably more for the same $95. This is how the three fit together, what the combination is worth in points and dollars, and when the extra cards are not worth the effort.

How the Chase trio works
Each card does one job. The Sapphire Preferred earns 3x on dining, select streaming and online groceries, 2x on other travel and 5x on Chase Travel, and it makes points worth more: our catalogue lists 25% more value when you redeem them for travel through Chase Travel. Freedom Unlimited earns 1.5% on everything else, 3% on dining and drugstores and 5% on Chase Travel. Freedom Flex earns 5% on rotating quarterly categories on up to $1,500 of spending per quarter after activation, plus 3% on dining and drugstores.
Both Freedom cards list the same perk: they pair with Sapphire cards to lift point value. In practice, Chase generally lets a cardholder combine the rewards earned on the Freedom cards with the points in their own Sapphire account, where they can be redeemed at the Sapphire’s better rate. That is the whole trick. Confirm how combining works on your own accounts before you rely on it.
Which card for which purchase
| Purchase | Use | Earns | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restaurants | Sapphire Preferred | 3x | Ties the Freedom cards’ 3%, and keeps dining on one card |
| Select streaming | Sapphire Preferred | 3x | Only the Sapphire has a streaming bonus |
| Online groceries | Sapphire Preferred | 3x | Only the Sapphire has an online grocery bonus |
| Travel through Chase Travel | Sapphire Preferred | 5x | All three pay 5, but the Sapphire lists trip cancellation and interruption insurance |
| Other travel | Sapphire Preferred | 2x | The Freedom cards have no general travel bonus |
| Drugstores | Freedom Unlimited or Flex | 3% | The Sapphire pays 1x here |
| This quarter’s 5% categories | Freedom Flex | 5% | Up to $1,500 of spending per quarter, after activation |
| Everything else | Freedom Unlimited | 1.5% | Beats the Sapphire’s 1x and the Flex’s 1% |
What the combination earns, in points and dollars
Take a hypothetical household that spends $2,480 a month: $400 on dining, $300 on online groceries, $30 on streaming, $200 on travel booked directly, $50 at drugstores, $300 that happens to fall in the Freedom Flex categories each month on average, and $1,200 on everything else. We assume their streaming services qualify for the Sapphire’s bonus.
Setup A: Sapphire Preferred alone
- Dining, online groceries, streaming: $730 a month × 3x
- 2,190 pts/mo
- Other travel: $200 × 2x
- + 400 pts/mo
- Drugstores, Flex-category spend, everything else: $1,550 × 1x
- + 1,550 pts/mo
- Points a year: 4,140 × 12
- 49,680
- Worth at 1 cent / at 1.25 cents through Chase Travel
- $497 / $621
Setup B: Sapphire Preferred + Freedom Unlimited
- Sapphire: dining, groceries, streaming and travel, as above
- 2,590 pts/mo
- Freedom Unlimited: drugstores $50 × 3
- + 150 pts/mo
- Freedom Unlimited: $1,500 of other spending × 1.5
- + 2,250 pts/mo
- Points a year: 4,990 × 12
- 59,880
- Worth at 1 cent / at 1.25 cents
- $599 / $749
Setup C: all three cards
- Sapphire: as above
- 2,590 pts/mo
- Freedom Flex: $300 in 5% categories × 5
- + 1,500 pts/mo
- Freedom Unlimited: drugstores $50 × 3
- + 150 pts/mo
- Freedom Unlimited: $1,200 of everything else × 1.5
- + 1,800 pts/mo
- Points a year: 6,040 × 12
- 72,480
- Worth at 1 cent / at 1.25 cents
- $725 / $906
The 1.25-cent figures assume every point is combined into the Sapphire account and redeemed for travel through Chase Travel. The $300 a month in Flex categories is an average; real category spending varies by quarter and never earns 5% past $1,500 a quarter.
- Sapphire Preferred alone$621
- + Freedom Unlimited$749
- + Freedom Flex$906
All three setups pay one $95 fee, for the Sapphire. Net of it: $526, $654 and $811.
Freedom Unlimited adds 10,200 points a year for no fee and almost no effort: it is just the card you use when nothing else pays more. Freedom Flex adds another 12,600 points, but only because we assumed $900 a quarter lands in its 5% categories and that every quarter gets activated.
Setting it up, step by step
- 1
Decide whether you need the Sapphire at all
The 25% redemption boost only matters if you will redeem for travel through Chase Travel. If you want cash, two no-fee cards on their own may suit you better. Our Sapphire Preferred review covers who it fits.
- 2
Mind Chase’s application rules
Chase is widely reported to decline applicants who have opened five or more personal cards from any issuer in the past 24 months, a policy known as 5/24. Space applications out, and remember each one typically results in a hard inquiry.
- 3
Add Freedom Unlimited first
It carries the most value for the least effort. Make it the default card for anything that is not dining, streaming, online groceries or travel.
- 4
Add Freedom Flex only if you will activate
Set a reminder for the start of each quarter. If you skip activations, Flex earns 1% on its categories and adds almost nothing over Freedom Unlimited.
- 5
Combine points before you redeem
Move the Freedom rewards into your Sapphire account, then redeem through Chase Travel to get the higher value.
Pitfalls that erase the gain
- Carrying a balance. Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex both run 19.99% to 28.74% variable after their 15-month 0% intro APR, and the Sapphire runs 20.24% to 28.24%. A few months of interest cancels a year of the extra points.
- Forgetting activations. Without them, Freedom Flex is a 1% card with a 3% dining rate you already have elsewhere.
- Redeeming at the wrong rate. Points redeemed as plain cash from a Freedom card do not get the Sapphire’s 25% boost.
- Complexity cost. Three cards means three due dates. Autopay the full statement balance on each.
The alternative to all of this is one flat card. Capital One Venture Rewards pays 2x on everything for the same $95, with nothing to combine or activate. We compare it with the Sapphire Preferred in a head-to-head, and the rotating-category cards in our category showdown.
Our verdict
Two cards for most people, three for the organised
The Sapphire Preferred plus Freedom Unlimited is the sweet spot: one $95 fee, one extra no-fee card, and a clear raise on everything outside the Sapphire’s categories. Freedom Flex is worth adding only for people who will activate every quarter and genuinely spend in the categories. Everyone else is better off keeping it simple.

Questions readers ask
What is the Chase trifecta?
It is a popular name for holding a Sapphire card alongside Chase Freedom Unlimited and Chase Freedom Flex. You earn on whichever card pays most for each purchase, then combine the rewards in the Sapphire account to redeem them at its better travel rate.
Can I move points from Freedom Unlimited to Sapphire Preferred?
Chase generally allows cardholders to combine rewards between their own Chase accounts, which is what lets Freedom rewards be redeemed through the Sapphire. The Freedom cards list pairing with a Sapphire card as a perk. Check the current rules for your own accounts.
Is Freedom Flex worth it if I already have Freedom Unlimited?
Only if you will activate its 5% categories every quarter and spend in them. It pays 5% on up to $1,500 per quarter in those categories, but just 1% on other purchases, where Freedom Unlimited pays 1.5%.
Do I need all three Chase cards?
No. Sapphire Preferred plus Freedom Unlimited captures most of the benefit for most households. The third card adds value only for people who manage the quarterly categories.
