Discover it Cash Back has no upfront bonus. Instead, Discover matches every dollar of cash back you earn in your first year, with no cap. Attach that to 5% rotating categories and a $0 fee and you get one of the best first years of any no-fee card. The second year is a different card. Here is what it does well, where it falls short, and how to tell which year you are buying.

  • Cashback Match: all cash back earned in the first year is matched, with no cap.
  • 5% on rotating quarterly categories, on up to $1,500 of spending per quarter.
  • No annual fee and no foreign transaction fees.
  • 0% intro APR for 15 months, then 18.24% to 27.24% variable.
  • Free FICO score in the app.
  • Categories must be activated every quarter or they earn 1%.
  • The 5% stops at $1,500 per quarter, so the bonus is worth $75 a quarter at most.
  • 1% on everything else, half what a flat 2% card pays.
  • The match is a one-time, year-one event, and there is no cash bonus up front.
  • Narrower acceptance abroad than Visa or Mastercard.

What the Cashback Match is actually worth

Many no-fee cards pay a fixed bonus, often $200, after a set amount of early spending. Discover pays nothing up front and instead doubles your whole first year at the end of it. That makes the match worth more than a fixed bonus for anyone who spends steadily, and less for anyone who barely uses the card.

Worked example

Year one vs year two, for a hypothetical household spending $2,000 a month

5% categories, maxed: $1,500 a quarter × 4 × 5%
$300
Everything else: $18,000 a year × 1%
+ $180
Cash back earned in the year
$480
Cashback Match at the end of year one
+ $480
Year one total
$960
Year two, with no match
$480

Assumes $6,000 a year lands in the 5% categories, the full quarterly cap, and every quarter is activated. That is the best case.

Put the same $24,000 of spending on Citi Double Cash and you earn 2%, or $480 a year, plus its $200 bonus in year one: $680. So in year one Discover wins by $280. In year two the two cards tie at $480, and that tie assumes you hit Discover’s cap every single quarter.

Discover it Cash Back strengths

An uncapped first-year match

The match is automatic and has no ceiling, so a heavy first year is rewarded in full. It suits someone who is about to move most of their spending onto one new card anyway. The welcome bonus ranking treats it separately for that reason: it is not a fixed amount, so it cannot be compared per dollar like a $200 offer.

A long intro APR and no fee to recover

15 months at 0% gives room for a large purchase, and with no annual fee there is nothing to earn back. Keeping the card open long term costs nothing.

Small, useful extras

No foreign transaction fees and a free FICO score in the app. Neither changes the maths, both are the kind of thing that makes a card pleasant to keep.

Discover it Cash Back weaknesses

The categories are work

Every quarter you have to activate the new categories, and then remember which purchases they cover. Miss an activation and those purchases earn 1%. Categories change, so the 5% may land on things you buy a lot one quarter and hardly at all the next.

The cap is low

$1,500 of spending per quarter means the 5% can never be worth more than $75 a quarter. After the cap, category spending earns 1% like everything else. A household that buys $3,000 of groceries in a grocery quarter earns 5% on only half of it.

1% on everything else

This is the weakness that decides year two. Outside the categories you earn 1%, where a flat card earns 2%. If only half the cap lands in the categories, say $750 a quarter, the numbers turn clearly against it:

Year two on $24,000 of spending
ScenarioDiscover it Cash BackCiti Double Cash
Categories maxed: $6,000 at 5%, $18,000 at 1%$480$480
Half the cap: $3,000 at 5%, $21,000 at 1%$360$480
Categories ignored: $24,000 at 1%$240$480
Year two on $24,000 of spending.

Acceptance abroad

Discover acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard outside the U.S. The lack of foreign transaction fees helps only where the card is accepted, so carry a backup on a different network when you travel.

Alternatives if a weakness is a dealbreaker

  1. 1. Same 5% categories, extra bonus categories and an upfront bonus

    $200 on $500
    Chase Freedom Flex · 4.5/5

Chase Freedom Flex has the same $1,500 quarterly 5% structure, plus 3% on dining and drugstores and 5% on Chase Travel, a $200 bonus and cell phone protection. No match, so year one is smaller for heavy spenders.

  2. 2. You do not want to think about categories at all

    2% flat
    Citi Double Cash · 4.7/5

2% on everything, no activation, no cap. Wins year two in every scenario above except the maxed one, where it ties.

  3. 3. You want to choose the category yourself

    3% chosen
Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards · 4.3/5

3% in a category you pick, 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, on up to $2,500 combined per quarter. Bank of America Preferred Rewards members earn 25% to 75% more.

  4. 4. You are a student with a thin credit file

    Same match
Discover it Student Cash Back · 4.5/5

The student version keeps the 5% categories and the first-year Cashback Match. We compare it with SavorOne Student in a separate head-to-head.

Our verdict

A great first year, then a card for its categories only

Discover it Cash Back is rated 4.6 because its first year is hard to beat among no-fee cards: an uncapped match on top of 5% categories. Its weaknesses show up in year two, when the 1% base rate and the $1,500 quarterly cap make a flat 2% card the better everyday choice. Take it for the match, keep it for the categories, and put everything else on something that pays 2%.

Questions readers ask

How does the Discover it Cashback Match work?

Discover automatically matches all the cash back you earn at the end of your first year, with no cap. If you earn $480 in year one, you receive another $480. It applies to the first year only.

Do I have to activate the Discover it 5% categories?

Yes. The 5% rotating categories apply on up to $1,500 of spending per quarter after you activate them. Purchases in a category you have not activated earn 1%.

Is Discover it Cash Back better than a 2% card?

In year one, usually yes, because the match doubles everything you earn. From year two, a flat 2% card such as Citi Double Cash earns as much or more unless more than a quarter of your spending lands in the 5% categories, which the $1,500 quarterly cap makes impossible above $24,000 a year.

Can I use a Discover card abroad?

Discover it Cash Back charges no foreign transaction fees, but Discover acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard in many countries. Carry a second card on another network when you travel.
